Smiling is one very good way to create a better life for yourself and also enhance the lives of everyone around you. Studies have shown that when you smile more either forcefully or not it can have a positive effect on your mood and reduce your stress level.  You might say, how does that work?  Well…one reason it works like that is because the muscles activated when you smile actually triggers production of endorphins.  As we mention so much at the academy and in the course, doing certain things causes certain things to happen just because that is how your incredible body works.  You can actually manipulate your body and life actually by learning how the mind, body and brain works.

Here are five great reasons to smile more:

  • Decreases the effects of pain

Smiling has been known to be one of the easiest and most natural ways to relieve stress. It is not really easy to smile more in a stressful situation, but studies shows that that there are a lot of health benefits when an individual smiles more in a stressful situation.  The production of cortisol occurs when you smile more.  Remember that it doesn’t even have to be genuine, just fake it if you have to!

Researchers observed that those who smile more had a lower heart rate than the individuals with neutral facial expression. When you feel that anxiety is about to take over, then it is the perfect time to smile more.

So since you know this is medically proven, use this as a tool to fight any sadness.  Search for anything positive it could be a funny image, video or something that brings good memories of the past which will make you smile more and laugh. Within a short time, you will not feel any more stress. So every time you find yourself in a stressful condition, try as much as possible to smile more.  If you are stressed, get around supportive people who make you happy!

If you catch cold very often, try as much as possible to smile more. As explained earlier, smiling is a great way to reduce stress and make an individual feel more relaxed. When the body is relaxed, it will be stronger and able to fight illnesses. In a situation when an individual smiles more often, it makes the immune system stronger due to the fact that the body produces white blood cell to fight illnesses.  Researchers found that children who were visited by people who made them smile more and laughed had a higher white blood cells than those who were not visited.  But there are many other studies that have been done which prove that smiling makes you healthier.

It’s known that positive people who are happy tend to have a better health and be more successful than those that are not. So when we mention the health benefits of smiling, we have to talk about the mood and general well-being of an individual.   Also, you end up being more self-confident and successful.

Think about it, would you do better networking with others with a smile on your face or looking serious or worse looking depressed?  Of course with a smile.  So you not only feel better directly due to a smile but also because of how people will judge and interact with you.  It’s inevitable that you are more successful when you are a person who smiles more.  You will have more friends, be or resourceful and therefor are able to navigate life with greater ease and success.

Physiologist Sarah Pressman at University of California discovered that people who smiled during needle injection felt 40% less pain.  That is an astonishing reduction.  Other peers agreed to dramatic difference in how much pain a person would experience depending on if he or she had a facial expression that mocked a smile, even when it was manipulated and not a true smile.

Obviously if you feel better, are healthier mentally and physically then the condition of your body is younger than it would be otherwise.  But there is more to it than that.  Your appearance is projected differently when you smile.

I have a theory about the energy and frequency you are on but that is my speculation.  What has been proven though is that people also perceive you differently.  When you are smiling to them you look younger and seem to have more vitality.  This was the result of several studies in which people were asked to guess ages of people who were much older than the age that was guessed.

For me it’s really easy….I just laugh at myself or my mistakes that contributed to the unhappiness.  I just think, well you are going to be able to help someone with lesson from this one!  If it wasn’t my fault, then I think about the earlier period of time, when instead of smiling I would be mad or feel sad.  Just being mindful of that growth makes me smile.  And I admit, sometimes, it isn’t automatic, but almost without fail, I can reflect in that way to bring me back to center.  A good time to practice that smile is rush hour traffic.  The opportunities! wow.
